Some common examples include insomnia and narcolepsy, both of which can leave patients lying in bed awake until the early hours of the morning, resulting in them finding it difficult to stay awake during the day.

    There are also factors outside of the patient’s control, working unconventional hours can result in shift-work sleep disorder, or breathing problems that lead to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

    Nightmares are uncomfortable to experience, and they often cause people to suddenly jolt awake with intense fear or worry. What some people might not know is that these vivid dreams happen because of unresolved waking issues, which then transition into frightening encounters.

    The amygdala, which is the fear centre in the brain, is very active during the REM cycle, and this can amplify negative emotions such as stress or anxiety. This ultimately leads to bad dreams that are somewhat based on real events, which is why they cause so much fear.     Foods that are rich in tryptophan, which is an amino acid, can be added to daily meals to increase serotonin levels. These lean proteins include chicken, fish, and egg whites. Whole grains, such as brown rice and whole wheat bread, can also be prioritized over refined carbs that are unhealthy.

    Patients can also avoid having caffeine close to their bedtime to avoid any energy spikes. People should rather opt for a glass of milk or herbal tea to put their body into a more relaxed state, which makes falling asleep much easier.

    The Stress-Sleep Spiral

    Mental health is one of the highest contributors to these conditions, and recent studies show that up to 90% of people with anxiety and depression suffer from insomnia. Although medication will help patients get into a calmer state of mind before bed, it will not be able to tackle the root of these emotions.
